Why is the YET! Team part of the YET! Program?

The YET! Program began as part of the Organizational Science doctorate program’s ongoing mission to use science to better their community through outreach. All members of the team are volunteers and are passionate about using a growth mindset to make a difference for students no matter their circumstances. Our team believes that applying a growth mindset early can help students in their school and personal life, not just during the YET! Program but for years to come.

How was the YET! Program designed?

The YET! Program was designed by a group of University of North Carolina at Charlotte professors in Organizational Science and Educational Psychology and Organizational Science doctoral students. The program uses the science and research of psychology, education, and management to focus on self-regulation and a growth mindset.

The program worked with a local Title One school to develop a curriculum that is appropriate and meaningful for elementary students, particularly 3rd to 5th graders. Each lesson is short and easy to apply and designed to grab (and keep) students’ attention. The goal of the program is to help bring the concepts above to students in a way that will last beyond the lessons.

The idea of a growth mindset was originally developed by psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck. The basis of this idea is that individuals can increase their success by taking a mindset that they just can’t do something… yet! The program also draws from psychology’s Social Cognitive Theory, which emphasizes the importance of self-talk to overcome negative thoughts, or what we call “stinkin’ thinkin’.” Finally, the program draws on the concept of self-regulation, the idea that we control our behavior, and further supports the importance of positive self-talk.
